Carnelian: a meditation on fire from Second Citizen.

We were fortunate to be offered the incredible space of the Round Chapel for the day to explore its extraordinary acoustics. It was a great opportunity to record the marimba for Aproxima Arts work Over Lunan, scheduled for performances in September 2021. Thanks to Hackney Historic Buildings Trust for the donation of their venue and to Leon Clowes and Irma Adinda for their help in making it happen.

Strom - German for 'electricity' - is an experimental track where sensors placed on the marimba notes and mallets triggered visuals on a giant LED screen, creating striking patterns and transformations.

Aproxima's creative team stayed at Hospitalfield Arts Centre in Arbroath to spend some time developing ideas at Lunan Bay, a stunning crescent beach with high sand dunes, a few miles up the north east coastline. The result will be a performance in the dunes - Over Lunan - which looks at ocean rise and flood mythology through time. The story takes you back to Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq and Syria), and incredible ritual texts inscribed on clay tablets, which record emerging ideas that have helped form our outlook on the world, even 4,000 years on. This short photographic animation is a simple 'mood board' that we created for discussion as we develop the script and musical score over the coming months.
